Shawn Chenoweth Dominates Gold Rush 125 at Flamboro Speedway

MILLGROVE, Ontario — The big victories keep coming for Shawn Chenoweth, as he dominated the Gold Rush for the Ontario Outlaw Super Late Models on Tuesday, August 5 at Flamboro Speedway.
Chenoweth showed the speed of the No. 89c in time trials, topping the sheet with a lap of 14.265 seconds. Jake Sheridan backed up his victory from the previous Friday night at Delaware Speedway by posting the second-quickest time (14.313) ahead of J.R. Fitzpatrick (14.371), Blake Childers (14.379), and Kyle Crump (14.596).
An invert of two was determined by a fan with a dice roll, placing Chenoweth on the outside of Sheridan for the green flag. The veteran wasted no time putting himself out front, taking the lead on Lap 1 and not looking back
as he looked to distance himself from the field. There was a slip up when fluid laid down from Josh Stade’s expired engine caused him to spin while trying to thread his way through lap traffic, but he was able to keep himself from sustaining damage. He was given back his position as a result of not being the cause of caution, and able to resume his advantage over the field.
Childers closed the gap in the closing stages, but was unable to find his way by as Chenoweth captured the checkered flag. It marks his second big victory of the season, after winning the Jackpot at the Hilltop at Sunset Speedway.
Childers, who normally races in the Reveal the Hammer Series in the United States, crossed the finish line in second ahead of reigning Ontario Outlaw Super Late Model Champion Fitzpatrick, Sheridan, and Todd Campbell. Rookie TJ Edwards captured a sixth-place finish in front of Dustin Jackson, Dario Capirchio, Chris Burrows, and Treyten Lapcevich. Lapcevich ran inside the top-five until mechanical issues sent him pit side on Lap 106.
Brandon Passer also showed speed inside the top-five until smoke began coming out the rear-end of his car, sending him to the pits a lap before Lapcevich. Glenn Styres was credited with a 12th-place finish after contact with the outside wall on Lap 105, followed by Ethan Counryea, Jaeger McMaster, Pete Shepherd II, Stade, and Crump. Crump did not take the green flag as a result of mechanical issues.
The Hogan Law & McClurkin Properties of Cambridge Pure Stocks were also on-hand, with a 30-lap invitational which saw 48 cars try to qualify for one of the 30 spots in the main event.
James Houghton, who has become the man to beat at the big events across the province, was the quickest in time trials with a lap of 18.951 seconds. Delaware Speedway regular David Rockwood was second quickest (19.018) ahead of John Cote (19.029), Matt Young (19.082), and Cody Wilds (19.085). Flamboro regular Chase Mitchell was sixth in front of Wayde Thorne, Gary Slama, Dan Storey, and Spencer Riddell.
The top-20 in qualifying automatically made the 30-lap Gold Rush feature, while the balance was sent to a 20-lap B-Main to set the remaining 10 cars. A series of cautions, though, saw the event shortened to nine laps. with previous feature winner Cam Thomson picking up the checkered flag ahead of Rodney Rutherford, Jo Lawrence, Mark Allan, Austin Etsell, Jordan Willms, Will Quarrie, Chad Corcoran, Glenn Schmidt, and Brandyn Milligan.
Tegan Ellis was the first car to not qualify for the main event in front of Mike Etsell, Brayden Zammit, Jeremy Dungey, Connor Ross, Leo Labarbera, Jeff Elslinger, Tyler Mayhew, Mac Ingram, Steve Oakes, Kris Lawrence, and Jeff Rourke. Mike Hall and Rachel Mitchell did not take the green flag.
An invert of three saw James Houghton start on the second row, with him biding his time as he quickly found his way into second, working on chasing down the leader. He would get alongside Cote with 10 laps to go, passing him to take over the lead.
James Houghton led the final 10 laps en route to the victory ahead of Matt Young, John Cote, Wayde Thorne, and Craig Cole. Last week’s feature winner Gary Slama placed sixth in front of Rob Hoskins, Cody Wilds, Spencer Riddell, and Phil Givens.
Flamboro regular Jordan Wilms was 11th, followed by Jo Lawrence, Dan Storey, Chance Rogers, Hailey Hill, Lane Zardo, Brady Cox, Jordan Morris, Chad Corcoran, and Rick Mitchell. Delaware Speedway competitor Will Quarrie was 21st ahead of Austin Etsell, Glenn Schmidt, Brandyn Milligan, Mark Allan, Rodney Rutherford, David Rockwood, Courtney Scott, Chase Mitchell, and Cam Thomson.
